On this date in 1991, the “Illtown(Irvington)” trio referred to as Naughty By Nature launched their self-titled debut LP on the now-defunct Tommy Boy imprint.
This album, which inside a six-month time span went platinum, dropped a sequence of singles that grew to become instantaneous anthems, making Naughty top-of-the-line hook makers in Hip Hop of that period. A few of these smash singles embody the “Uptown Anthem”, which contains a rookie Tupac Shakur within the video as a promo for the cult traditional flick Juice, the rags-to-riches story of “All the things Is Gonna Be Alright” and the millennial traditional gem “O.P.P.”.
Salute to Treach, Vin Rock, and DJ Kay Gee for giving the tradition such a traditional piece of Hip Hop historical past!
